Latvia – EoI 962

We are writing to express our interest in SYSTEMIC project. The skills we have developed from our work experience and academic background support our candidacy.

Laila Meija is a Medical Doctor specialised in Nutrition and an associate professor in Riga Stradins University in Department of Sports and Nutrition.

 Research areas include:

  1. nutrition, fatty acids, vitamin D status in pregnant and lactating women;
  2. metabolic diseases factors influencing glycaemic and insulinemic response (amount and type of fibre, food processing);
  3. biologically active substances in wholegrains, especially rye and barley (fiber, lignans, alkylresorcinols).

Ksenija Ņikuļcova graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and continues studying for a master’s degree at Rīga Stradiņš University. She works as a dietitian, participates in the project related to excess weight, dietary habits and vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid status in pregnancy and also has experience in laboratory practice, where she studied the biological activity of various food products, which can affect the health.

Working together we are interested in studying existing food technologies in relation to their ability to adapt to food production challenges; development of methods to help make compromise decisions in this sector; identifying knowledge gaps and research needs and passing this information on to research funding agencies and governments; dissemination of knowledge to industry, society, politics, and transfer of knowledge to education and training.

RSU participates in WP2 – Production and WP3 – Nutrition:

• In the task 2.3. “Novel Foods based on new ingredients, materials, and processes” RSU researchers are studying the impact of non-traditional raw materials, production process, and the effects of the final products on human health and functions for taking part in writing review articles;

• In the task 3.3. “Physiological effects of sustainable diets” RSU researchers are carrying out an in-depth analysis of the risks associated with diet during pregnancy and lactation;

• In the task 3.4. “Dietary assessment and nutritious balanced diet” RSU researchers are working with diet evaluation and a balanced diet in terms of nutrients that includes entry of data, work with scientific databases GHGE, FoodEx2 and water quality assessment.
